Libraries to be pop-up tourist information points during the Games

Libraries and museums in Surrey will become pop-up tourist information points during the London 2012 Games to help cater for the influx of tourists.

The move was inspired by the pop-up phenomenon, which has seen temporary restaurants and retail stores appear in homes, businesses and street corners across the world.

Surrey County Council has already started training library and museum staff on all things Olympics and staff have been tasked with researching local attractions.

Denise Saliagopoulos, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services and the 2012 Games, said: “More than a million visitors are expected to come to Surrey this summer when the Olympic Cycle Road Race, Cycle Time Trials and Olympic Torch Relay take place in the county.

“The pop-up tourist information centres will prove an innovative way to provide visitors with information on everything from major attractions to great places to eat and shop. They will also provide information about Olympic events and venues and there will be takeaway maps promoting local businesses to help Surrey firms make the most of the Games.”

Libraries have been embracing new ideas and technology. Surrey County Council has been working with the Guildford Tourist Information Centre to ensure free wi-fi will be available in all libraries before the summer.
