Pre-Games Training Camps
National Olympic Committees and National Paralympic Committees are responsible for looking after the athletes they will bring to the London 2012 Games. These organisations are being encouraged and incentivised by LOCOG to bring athletes to train at the UK’s world-class sporting facilities in the run-up to and during the 2012 Games. This is an opportunity for athletes to train and acclimatise and a chance for the UK to showcase its sporting facilities and generate investment for local economies.
If there is a camp in your area, this may offer promotional opportunities for your region or business.
Firstly, find out if there is a training camp near you by checking the list on the official London 2012 website visit, www.london2012.com/nocnpc
If there is, contact your local tourism organisation – this may be a tourist board, a Destination Management Organisation (DMO) or a division of your local council and find out if they have any plans and whether you can get involved.
Opportunities may include:
• Providing services for the athletes e.g. accommodation, meals, tourism experiences
• Offering complimentary or discounted experience to athletes and showcase your region
• Inviting athletes to become an ambassador of your region or product back in their own country of origin and use social media to send messages to international audiences
• Media opportunities – work with VisitBritain to showcase your destination to the team’s national broadcaster/media.
The US Diving Camp at Ponds Forge in Sheffield
Based on a team size of 25 people, the team will spend approximately £50,000 in Sheffield’s economy on transport, accommodation, catering, facility hire and specialist sports services such as physiotherapists. This figure is expected to more than double when the extra spend of family and friends is taken into account.
